The ERP consultant roadmap — five stages, in order

Most people entering this field start at the wrong end. They open a system, learn where the buttons are, and produce a competent data-entry clerk with a consultant’s job title.

The order below is the whole argument. Each stage is unusable without the one before it.

Stage one: the business language, before the software

You cannot automate what you do not understand.

An ERP is accounting wrapped in technology. Somebody who does not know what a debit is will configure a tax code that balances on screen and destroys a trial balance.

The pattern is common enough to be predictable: an able programmer, asked to correct an invoice, deletes its journal entry. The screen looks right. The accounts no longer add up, and nobody notices until the close.

Two subjects, in this order:

What Why it comes first Where to start
Financial accounting Every module posts to it eventually Double entry, the trial balance, the income statement
Supply chain Where the entries come from The full journey: purchase order to goods receipt to vendor invoice to sales order to delivery

AccountingCoach covers the first at no cost. For the second, search for the procure-to-pay cycle rather than for any product name — the cycle is the same in every system, and the procurement cycle is written out here with the entry each step produces.

Stage two: pick a camp

The field splits in two, and the split decides what you study for the next three years.

Functional consultant Technical consultant
What they do Sit with the client, understand the problem, configure the system to solve it Write code when configuration genuinely cannot reach the requirement
Core skill Communication, process design, the ability to say no A language: Python for Odoo, ABAP for SAP, X++ for Dynamics
The analogy The architect who decides where the rooms go The structural engineer who pours the columns

Neither pays better than the other in the long run, and the functional route has the shorter runway from a standing start. What decides it is which conversation you would rather have every day.

The full breakdown of who does what on a project team is worth reading before you choose.

Stage three: pick one product

Not four. One. A CV listing four systems reads as four months each.

  • Odoo — the fastest route to a first paid role. Open source, Python, and demand concentrated in the small and mid-sized companies that make up most of the Gulf and Egyptian market. Start with the Odoo learning path.
  • SAP S/4HANA — the highest ceiling and the longest climb. OpenSAP publishes free courses from the vendor itself. The S/4HANA path is here.
  • Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central — the balanced option, and unusually well documented. Microsoft Learn carries free tracks and the certification exams. The Business Central path is here.

The choice matters less than the commitment to it. Somebody two years deep in one product is employable; somebody six months deep in four is not.

Stage four: build something, alone

Do not walk into an interview and say you took courses. Say you implemented a company.

The exercise that works, and takes a weekend:

  1. Create a fresh database.
  2. Create two vendors and ten products.
  3. Run a full purchase cycle — order a hundred cartons.
  4. Receive them into the warehouse, and confirm the stock balance moved.
  5. Sell five cartons on thirty-day terms.
  6. Produce a profit and loss statement, and explain every line on it.

Step six is the one that separates the candidates. Anybody can complete the first five by following a video. Explaining why the gross margin is what it is requires stage one.

If you can do this unaided, you are employable at junior level. That claim is testable, which is why it is worth making.

Stage five: the skills nobody examines you on

Projects do not fail technically. They fail socially.

Change management. Staff will resent you, because you are taking away a way of working they were comfortable with. The wrong sentence is your old process was bad. The right one names what they get: two hours a day back, or a month-end that finishes on the fourth rather than the fourteenth.

Listening. A client rarely knows what they want. They know what hurts. The job is to hear the complaint and translate it into a configuration — and to notice when the complaint has no technical solution at all.

These are set out in more detail here, and they are the reason two consultants with identical product knowledge have very different careers.

What the timeline actually looks like

This field is a marathon, and the early months are genuinely disorienting.

  • The first six months: you will feel lost. This is normal and near-universal.
  • After a year: the threads start connecting — you see why a stock adjustment moved a cost of sales figure.
  • After three years: you are the scarce commodity, and the recruiters find you.

Start today, and start in a demo database where a mistake costs nothing. An error in a test environment is the best teacher available, and the only one that is free.

The full ten-station paths for each major product are in Learn ERP, and if you are coming from an accounting role specifically, that route has its own article.
