Station 10 of 10
Certification and a first job in Dynamics 365 F&O
What you leave this station with
An exam plan with a date and an amount, a portfolio for somebody with no live project, and written answers to the questions interviews repeat.
Nine stations are behind you. This one turns them into income.
Start by correcting a common order: the certificate here is not the door in, but it is not decoration either. A Microsoft partner is measured on its count of certified consultants, so the certificate is currency inside the partner network before it is evidence of knowledge.
The exam, by the numbers
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Certification | Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Finance Functional Consultant Associate |
| Exam | MB-310 |
| Duration | 100 minutes |
| Price | $165 |
| Languages | English and Japanese only |
| Renewal | Every twelve months, by a free online assessment |
| Retake | 24 hours after the first attempt |
Read the languages row twice. No Arabic. That makes reading English a condition rather than an advantage, and explains why it was in the prerequisites at station one.
Read the renewal row three times. The certification lapses if it is not renewed annually. The renewal is free, online and takes an hour, and dozens of certified people still lapse every year because they forgot. Put the reminder in your calendar on the day you pass, not eleven months later.
The rest of the family, and what has retired
| Certification | Number | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Finance Functional Consultant | MB-310 | Active — start here |
| Supply Chain Management | MB-330 | Active |
| Finance & Operations Apps Developer | MB-500 | Active |
| SCM Functional Consultant Expert | MB-335 | Retired 30 June 2026 |
| Solution Architect Expert | MB-700 | Retired 30 June 2026 |
The last two rows are a lesson in themselves: Microsoft retires credentials on a cycle. Check any certification’s status on its official page before building six months of your time on it, and do not trust an article — including this one — a year after it was published.
Preparation that works
The exam measures what you know how to do rather than what you memorised. Microsoft publishes three things free that most candidates ignore.
- The exam study guide — the map of the scope, opened at station two rather than here.
- A practice assessment that shows you the style and level of the questions.
- An exam sandbox where you see the interface before exam day.
The third is underrated and lowers nerves more than any extra revision.
And do not study from copied questions. They memorise answers to questions that have changed, and leave you helpless in front of any new phrasing.
The portfolio: what you show with no live project
The partner hiring you is not expecting a project. They want evidence that you think like a consultant. Four documents do it.
One: an account structure and dimension design. The one from station three, with every dimension justified by a report. Two pages say more about you than a certificate.
Two: an eight-step close checklist with owners and due times, with inventory close in its correct place. Showing it says, without saying it, that you have seen a close.
Three: the thirty-day documentation. The screenshots you executed in the free trial, each with the journal that resulted. That is what turns “I trained myself” from a claim into something checkable.
Four: five written case diagnoses. A held invoice, an unsettled payment, a journal with no dimension, an inventory close adjustment that landed in the next month, and a rejected electronic invoice. For each: the symptom, the cause, and who resolves it.
What interviews actually ask
- What is the difference between the physical and financial update, and what decides whether the first posts?
- Why does cost of goods sold change after inventory close?
- Where is the revenue account derived from, and why is it not fixed on the invoice?
- What is the difference between revaluation and translation?
- A customer says their vendor statement is wrong and the balance is right — what do you check first?
Four of the five are accounting rather than software. Write your answers before the first interview rather than during it.
What distinguishes you from a candidate with the same certificate
This market has hundreds of certified people. The certificate gets you onto the list; it does not get you off it and into the interview.
Three things do, in order of effect.
One: an industry you actually know. A consultant who understands manufacturing or retail beats one who understands only the system, because half the job is translating between the language of the business and the language of the software. Put your previous sector on your CV as an asset rather than as history.
Two: Arabic alongside English. The product works in Arabic, as in station eight, and customers in this region ask for training and documentation in Arabic, which partners struggle to staff. It is rare, in demand, and named in no job advert.
Three: localisation. Anybody who knows ZATCA and UAE e-invoicing in detail gets asked for by name, because every project in the region passes through them and few have mastered them. It is the shortest route to a specialism in a crowded market.
Three routes to a first job
One — a Microsoft partner, in a junior role. The widest door. You get the permanent environment, the project, a mentor and a salary. The partner needs certified staff for its own standing, so it may pay for the exam itself — ask for it while negotiating.
Two — from inside a company that owns the system. An accountant in a company running it is closer to the role than any outside candidate. Ask to move to the systems team before asking for a job elsewhere.
Three — from the smaller sibling. The move is shorter than it looks on the accounting side and longer than it looks on the product side: the cycles are the same, and the screens and the extension language are entirely different. The difference in figures is in the Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations guide.
What you actually do in this station
- Book the exam date, then work backwards from it.
- Run the practice assessment and the exam sandbox a week before.
- Assemble the four portfolio documents in one sendable file.
- Write your answers to the five questions by hand.
- Put the annual renewal reminder in your calendar on the day you pass.
- Revisit how to become an ERP consultant and what moves a consultant’s pay.
The three commonest mistakes
One: forgetting the annual renewal. The certification lapses after a year and a CV becomes wrong without its owner knowing.
Two: studying from copied questions. Answers get memorised to questions that changed.
Three: presenting the certificate alone. A competitor presenting a design, a close checklist and thirty days of documentation goes ahead of you.
The acceptance test for this station
- State the exam number, duration, price, languages and renewal cycle.
- Name the active and retired certifications and the retirement date.
- Show your four portfolio documents.
- Answer the five questions without looking.
- Name the three routes to a first job, and which is yours and why.
What comes next
The path is finished. What follows is a profession rather than a product: how a client relationship is run and how a project is led. Start at the career track, and at ERP team roles.
