Station 2 of 10

The training environment in Dynamics 365 F&O

Ahmed Hassan Algammal7 min read

What you leave this station with

A written plan for thirty days you only get once, a clear view of the trial's ceiling, and a permanent alternative the rest of the path rests on.

Station one said the environment opens in week seven. This station explains why, and what to do with it.

The fact first

Microsoft offers a free trial of the finance and supply chain apps, thirty days, with demo data and guided task walkthroughs.

Microsoft’s own wording is the important sentence here: you can explore the product and exercise scenarios, but you cannot customise it.

Read what that means for somebody training rather than evaluating: configuring the system — financial dimensions, posting profiles, item model groups, matching policies — is the whole job of a functional consultant. The trial shows you a product already configured and does not let you configure it.

So it is a showroom rather than a workshop. Anybody building a training plan on it meets the ceiling on day two.

And note a second thing many people get wrong: on Microsoft’s own free trial page, Business Central carries a “Try for free” button while Finance and Supply Chain Management carry “Request a demo”. The trial is documented on the “before you buy” page on Microsoft Learn rather than on the marketing page — which alone explains why half the internet thinks it does not exist.

Four routes, and what each gives

Route What it gives Its ceiling
1. The trial — 30 days A live product with data and guided tasks No configuration, no renewal
2. Microsoft Learn 48 hours of official syllabus, interactive units Free and permanent
3. An environment from inside a job Real configuration and a real project Needs a job
4. An environment on your own subscription Full control Needs a lifecycle project and a cloud subscription

They are sequenced rather than chosen between.

Route two before route one

Start with Microsoft Learn rather than the trial. The reason is arithmetic: the trial is a resource that does not renew, and the syllabus is one that does not run out.

Spend the first four weeks reading through the “configure financial management” path, writing down what you will execute when the environment opens. Then open the thirty days with an execution list in hand.

And Microsoft Learn units carry interactive exercises in the browser on many topics — closer to a real environment than anyone who has not opened them assumes.

How the thirty days get spent

One rule: nothing is opened without a written question in front of it.

Days What you do
1–5 Systematic orientation: workspaces, search, security, how screens are built
6–12 A complete purchase cycle from requisition to payment, reading every journal
13–18 A complete sales cycle, packing slip, invoice and collection
19–24 Inventory: movements, counting, and the effect of inventory close
25–28 Reports: a trial balance, a vendor statement, an ageing list
29–30 Documentation: screenshots and written notes that outlive the trial

The last two days are the most important row in the table. The trial ends and the knowledge stays in your own file. Anyone documenting nothing lost the whole month.

Microsoft sends a reminder three days before the trial expires — make the last two days a plan rather than a surprise.

What that ceiling means for the buying decision, rather than only for training, is in the Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations guide.

What can actually be configured in the trial

The trial does not allow customisation. The practical question is: where exactly is the line?

It runs between three things.

Level Example In the trial?
Entering transactions A purchase order, an invoice, a journal Yes
Master data A new item, vendor or customer Usually yes
System configuration A posting profile, a financial dimension, a number sequence This is where it stops

So the trial teaches you to operate, not to configure. That is enough for stations four, five and six, and not enough for station three — which the whole path rests on.

The practical conclusion reorders your plan: spend the thirty days executing cycles, and study configuration from the official syllabus and the documentation. Do not wait to try configuring a financial dimension yourself before you understand it — the understanding is free, and the trial is not.

Anybody who genuinely needs the configuration — because they are preparing for an exam or a job — gets there through an environment from inside a job or a partner, as in the table above.

What gets built without an environment

One: design the account structure on paper. Main accounts and financial dimensions, with a specific report justifying every dimension. That is station three’s exercise, and it starts now.

Two: write the journal before you see it. For every document in both cycles, write the expected journal and then verify. The gap is the lesson.

Three: compute the costing in a spreadsheet. Three purchases at three prices and one sale, at weighted average then at FIFO. That exercise specifically is what makes station six comprehensible rather than a vocabulary list.

What not to buy at this stage

Third-party courses promising a permanent shared environment.

The question before paying: which environment, on whose subscription, shared with how many trainees, and is it reset? A shared environment reset weekly is useless for a close exercise, and the close is half of a finance consultant’s job.

The official syllabus is free and more current, because it moves with the product four times a year.

What you actually do in this station

  • Finish the “configure financial management” path as reading before opening any environment.
  • Write the thirty-day execution list before day one, in a table like the one above.
  • Open the trial in week seven, not before.
  • Document every screen you execute with a screenshot and two lines: what you did, and which journal resulted.
  • Open the MB-310 study guide now and make it your reading index.
  • Apply to an implementation partner this month. The permanent environment comes with the job.

The three commonest mistakes

One: opening the trial on day one. The only non-renewable resource goes into wandering.

Two: waiting for a permanent free environment. There is not one, and months go into waiting that could have finished 48 hours of syllabus.

Three: not documenting. The month ends and nothing survives it to show in an interview.

The acceptance test for this station

  1. State the trial’s ceiling in Microsoft’s own words, and what it means for a functional consultant.
  2. Name the four routes and the order they are used in.
  3. Show the thirty-day execution list you wrote.
  4. Show your documentation: five screens with screenshots and journals.
  5. Explain why Microsoft Learn precedes the trial rather than the reverse.

What comes next

You know where you execute. The next station builds the foundation everything else stands on: legal entities and master data — main accounts and financial dimensions, and a decision with no way back after the first journal.
